Hello Vinyl Junkies!!  You hear us proudly say our music is “Handpicked” on the Tide, but in the literal sense, you can only get the “hand” in handpicked when you feel the music. Each day, on the Vinyl Vault, we hand-select a track for you from some of the greatest albums of all time. From current to classic and plenty in between, lend an ear to the warmth and wonder – and yes, some pops and skips here and there. For years, it was our only connection to some of the most amazing music of our lives. Check out what we’ve been playing below.  Special thanks to our new Vinyl Vault sponsor Vinyl Daze Records and Sound “Where Music Comes Full Circle.” In the Linkhorn Shops behind Eurasia Cafe off Laskin Road at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. www.vinyldazerecords.com.

How to Choose the Right Turntable:

Today’s turntables offer a variety of different features that need to be considered when purchasing. All of the features are important in making the right choice on a turntable that is perfect for your specific needs.

1. Belt Drive vs. Direct Drive.

Belt Drive- In a belt drive, the platter (rotating component on which the recorded sits) rests on top of a bearing as it rotates, with the motor off to the side. The platter connects to the motor that spins by an elastic belt. The belt can act as a shock absorber from the motor. The isolation of the motor from the platter allows less unwanted noise from the tonearm to travel to your speakers.

Direct Drive- In a direct drive, the platter sits directly on top of the motor so no belt is needed to spin your record. This results in more consistency when it comes to the speed of the turntable, resulting in constant sound.  This design is very simple yet reliable.

2. Automatic vs. Manual Operation.

Automatic- These are the most convenient tables to get. Simply place your album onto the platter and press a button. The tonearm (the arm that swings over the record allowing the needle to make contact) will automatically lift, move over the record’s lead-in groove and start playing. When the album is over the tonearm will return to its original position and turn off.

Manual- These tables require you to manually lift the tonearm and place it in the grooves to start playing. To assist with this process, most manual tables have a cueing lever or manual lifter mechanism that suspends the tonearm above the record and then gently lowers the needle into the grooves. Manual tables allow for easier playback and skipping if needed.

3. Phono Preamp- The tiny voltages generated by a turntable’s needle as it glides through the grooves of a record need to be amplified many times before they can be heard as music through your speakers. That is where the phono preamp comes in. Many of today’s receivers lack the inputs required to connect a turntable directly. If your receiver has no phono input, you’ll need to choose a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, or add an optional external preamp to your system. Built-in phono preamps offer the simplest, most cost-effective option, but an outboard preamp may offer better sound quality.

4. Cartridge and Tonearm- Much of a turntable’s sound is dictated by the quality of its cartridge and tonearm. The cartridge is a small bundle of magnets and wires enclosed in a housing that mounts to the end of your turntable’s tonearm. The cartridge attaches to the tonearm, and holds the needle or stylus that actually rides through the record’s grooves and generates the audio signal. The best are usually very light, because a light stylus creates less noise and therefore a better ratio of signal to noise.

5. USB Interface- Turntables with a USB connection make a great choice for transferring your record collection to a computer for storage and playback. Some plug into your computer, while others can record directly to a USB thumb drive.

6. Lastly be sure to check the specs and features actually listed on the specific turntable you are looking at. This will give you any of the numbers and qualifications you could be looking for to dictate the sound you want to get.

Caring for your Turntable

There are many things to consider when caring for your turntable whether it is vintage or modern.  Most important is to protect it. Tables do not take kindly to water or hard impacts, which can permanently ruin them. Store your turntable in a safe and dry place.  Extreme temperatures can cause damage as well.

Be sure to keep the exterior clean. Clean with a damp cloth if needed, avoiding any electrical ports, jacks, or wires. For wooden exteriors, wood polish works well.  Compressed air works well on dust without scratching.

Be sure to look after the entire inner workings of the table, including the platter, tonearm, and needle. Clean with a dry cloth that won’t scratch or used compressed air to blow out dust and any buildup.

Be sure to check the wires and power unit of the table.  Make sure things are working and not too crammed or in positions that could cause damage.

Caring for the Needle or Stylus

Caring for the needle or stylus is essential to the sound quality and well-being of your records. Over time the needle will build up dust. Be sure to keep your records and turntable clean to prevent this build up.  If the needles and/or record has a build up of dust, the needle will not lay fully in the groove of the record, resulting in less than optimum sound. The simplest way to prevent this is to clean the needle and record before you use it. Using your fingers would work but could cause damage to the needle. There are specific brushes made to clean needles that will not cause damage. Eventually the needle will wear down and need to be replaced, but with continued maintenance of your turntable, the needles will last a good amount of time.

Tips For Buying Used Vinyl Records

  1. Check condition of outer sleeve. Cosmetic damage to sleeve is only an issue if taking resale into account, or comparing multiple copies at the used shop.
  2. Check condition of inner sleeve. If absent, record is more likely to be badly scratched.
  3. Place record on outer sleeve. Look for evidence of warps. If it doesn’t lie flat on the sleeve, it’s badly likely unplayable.
  4. Examine record surface. Determine if markings on surface are scratches or dirt. Look for defects in the pressing.
  5. Feel edge of record and rotate. This should reveal an out-of-round shape.

Why Vinyl over Digital

Music on vinyl is music the way the artist intended. Music is an analog sound, and vinyl is an analog product. Each vinyl record is covered in grooves that capture the intricate details of music with the deepest, richest sounds. CDs and other digital products like Mp3s just can’t compare. Their sound is converted, compressed and lacking the quality and accuracy of an analog recording. Vinyl also has a personal connection. Above all, music is art and vinyl records not only let the musical art shine through with the best quality, they often come with beautiful cover art. Nirvana’s Nevermind, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, Springsteen’s Born in the USA: when you think of the album, you think of the art. Art that doesn’t come beautifully displayed with your electronic download.  Vinyl allows you to possess your favorite music collection as more than a combination of electronic code. It can’t be illegally downloaded. Vinyl records hold the history of music, and the future of quality sound in music. You won’t pass down your Mp3 collection to your kids, but your vinyl collection can be passed down, collected and enjoyed for generations.
